Active adults doing functional fitness training

Services & Approach

Training Built for the Life You Want to Keep Living

Private, in-home training for adults 40+ built around five interconnected pillars. Not a generic workout — a personalized system designed for lifelong capability.

Five Pillars. One Purpose. Lifelong Capability.

At Montague Movement & Mind, we don't train simply for how you feel today. We train for what you want to remain capable of doing 10 years from now. Our approach combines five complementary disciplines — each chosen because it delivers real, lasting results for adults 40 and over. Together, they build the strength, mobility, balance, coordination and mental resilience that keep you capable, confident and independent for decades to come.

Strength

Build the Body That Carries You Through Life

Strength isn't about lifting heavier weights or building bigger muscles. For adults 40+, strength has a practical purpose: maintaining the physical capacity to live independently and confidently. Using resistance bands, bodyweight movements and functional exercises, training focuses on the muscles and movement patterns involved in everyday life — getting out of a chair, carrying groceries, climbing stairs, lifting luggage, playing with grandchildren.

Strength protects capability.

  • Maintains and improves everyday physical capability
  • Reduces injury risk and supports joint health
  • Improves posture and functional movement patterns
  • Builds usable, real-world strength — not bodybuilder bulk

Mobility

Preserve Your Freedom to Move

Being strong is valuable, but strength becomes less useful if you can't move comfortably. Mobility training focuses on maintaining and improving functional range of motion, flexibility, joint movement, posture and movement quality. Sessions incorporate controlled movements for the shoulders, hips, spine, knees and ankles, adapted to your abilities and limitations. The larger objective is freedom — to bend, reach, turn, walk comfortably and continue participating in life.

Mobility protects freedom.

  • Reduces stiffness and chronic tension
  • Improves range of motion in key joints
  • Supports recovery and injury prevention
  • Makes everyday movement easier and more comfortable

Non-Contact Boxing

Train the Body and Brain Together

This isn't competitive boxing. There is no sparring and no person-to-person striking. Instead, focus mitts and controlled boxing movements create an engaging physical and mental workout. You'll learn combinations, footwork and movement while simultaneously challenging coordination, timing, cardiovascular fitness, concentration and reaction. When a trainer calls a combination — Jab. Cross. Hook. Move. — you must listen, process, coordinate and respond. It turns exercise into an activity that requires both physical movement and mental engagement. And there's another benefit that shouldn't be underestimated: it's fun.

Boxing develops coordination, conditioning and confidence.

  • Improves coordination and reaction time
  • Builds upper body strength and cardiovascular endurance
  • Challenges concentration and mental sharpness
  • Makes training genuinely enjoyable

Tai Chi

Develop Balance, Control and Awareness

Where boxing introduces speed and reaction, Tai Chi introduces control and awareness. Drawing on decades of martial-arts experience, Tai Chi is used to work on balance, posture, weight transfer, breathing, coordination and controlled movement. Instead of simply moving more, you learn to move deliberately — shifting weight smoothly, maintaining posture, coordinating the upper and lower body and becoming more aware of how your body moves through space. Boxing says: React. Tai Chi says: Control. Together, they create a much more interesting movement system.

Tai Chi develops balance, control and awareness.

  • Improves balance and significantly reduces fall risk
  • Reduces stress, anxiety and blood pressure
  • Enhances body awareness and coordination
  • Accessible and effective at any fitness level

Mindset

Train the Person, Not Just the Body

Physical change requires more than knowing which exercises to perform. Consistency, confidence, habits, self-belief and the ability to manage setbacks all matter. As a Certified Hypnotherapist, Michael Montague brings an additional perspective to this pillar. Mindset work can incorporate breathing, visualization, mental rehearsal, positive self-talk, focus, goal setting and confidence building. A client might visualize confidently climbing stairs, travelling, playing golf or completing a boxing combination. An important part of this pillar is helping clients recognize progress — shifting from 'I'm getting too old for that' to 'Look what I'm still capable of doing.'

Mindset develops confidence, consistency and belief in what's possible.

  • Builds consistency and long-term motivation
  • Reduces self-limiting beliefs about age and capability
  • Develops resilience and mental toughness
  • Connects physical progress to a larger life vision

How the Five Pillars Work Together

The real strength of this approach is that these aren't five separate programs — they're interconnected. Strength gives you the physical capacity to act. Mobility gives you the freedom to move. Boxing challenges coordination, reactions and conditioning. Tai Chi develops balance, control and awareness. Mindset helps develop the confidence and consistency to continue.

Strength + Mobility + Boxing + Tai Chi + Mindset = Capability
